So interesting to walk around all of Fort Santiago - including Fort Santiago Part & the surrounding sites ... it was in away like a walk back in time Fort Santiago ( Spanish - Fuerte de Santiago ) was built from 1590 - 1593 ... on the site of the original Spanish palm logs & earth mound fort - which was mostly destroyed by Chinese pirates , when they invaded Manila years earlier In 1896 the fort served as a prison for national hero Jose Rizal before his execution by firing squad , near bye The gardens & scenery During World War 2 ... the Fort Santiago was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army from the American ... mostly as a fortification & prison for captured soldiers & guerrillas , with also none informing Filipino citizens During the Battle of Manila in Feb 1945 Fort Santiago sustained heavy damage from American & Filipino military shelling ... to this day you can still see the scars of this devastating battle After WW2 - in 1950 this Manila iconic historical site ( Fort Santiago ) was declared a Philippine Shrine Of Freedom All of Fort Santiago & a lot of surrounding Intramuros ... is a must experience ... if visiting Manila I spend over 4 hours exploring all of Fort Santiago ... from day to early evening The photos with this review , are only from the first part of this Instramuros Fort , including the park area & the historical buildings / ramparts ( walls ) along side the park
