Our project is to create new, sustainable, livelihood opportunities for the coastal communities of Medellin, Cebu and the Philippines, through the culture of marine invertebrates. We are convinced that mariculture, or aquaculture of marine species, and fresh water aquaculture will become as vital as agriculture within the 21st century. Everyone indeed recognizes the need to produce more high-quality proteins for an ever-growing human population, but this has to be done in a sustainable way, with respect for the environment. The Philippines have an incredibly rich marine domain, which needs to be protected from over-fishing and cyanide or dynamite fishing. Mariculture is the answer to both challenges: more production and better, easier protection. The CMDC will develop accessible, low environmental impact and sustainable methods that will allow the culture of valuable marine invertebrates with limited investment. We plan to focus on giant clams (Tridacna), sea cucumbers (Holothurians), topshells (Trochus) with the collaboration of Philippine and foreign universities. An abundant scientific literature exists on these topics, and a lot of know-how can be found in the local universities, but very few projects have reached the fishermen and local communities, due to the lack of funding and the fact that the methods developed in the laboratories are far too sophisticated for local implementation.
