Being a high school kid growing up in Davao during the late 60's there was no ferry boat going to Samal. You had to take motorized bangkas to cross. And if you have to bring across a vehicle you will need to contract a barge to do it. Nowadays there is a regular ferry service between Sasa Wharf and Samal Island for people and vehicles. The pictures and videos I will be posting is my voyage from Samal Island going back to Davao City thru Sasa Wharf. I am happy for the residents of Davao and Samal because this is definitely a great convenince for everybody.

No toilets. Waiting for the barge takes almost 30mins, but the travel time is almost 15mins max. Depending on the waves. 24/7 operation, but waiting for the barge to come at 10pm onwards gets a little bit longer, especially during weekdays when tourists come less often. During weekends, barges keep coming even until midnight, or past midnight.

From their appearance these ferries have clearly seen better days but I have been using them regularly for the last eight years and can never recall a problem of any sort. In any case the crossing is quite short only ten minutes or so. If you want to come to Samal Island by car or motor bike then this is your only option. As you leave the facility on your left you will see The Camp Holiday Resort, plus quite a large convenience store with a good selection of goods { Nest } and a Phoenix gas station. You may want to fill up here before going any further but these days there are plenty of other gas stations on the island. There are no taxis on Samal Island but there are always a number of motorised tricycles waiting in front of the ferry facility who will take you where you want to go.
